Overview
What exactly is video streaming? Video streaming is a method of displaying video
over the internet. There are two different ways you can stream video over the internet.
One is to stream it live. The
DSU Webcam is an example of a live stream. The second method is to stream
archived video on-demand.
YouTube.com is an example of a site that utilizes on-demand video
streaming.
Because DSU offers many online courses many of our instructors have chosen to record
lecture videos to post online. The students can view them, on-demand, anytime they
would like. DSU also streams all of the home athletic events live on the web to
make it easier for the fans and alumni to watch a game if they are unable to attend.
Requirements
Requirements for viewing streaming video:
Internet connection that can sustain a constant connection at one of the 3 listed
bitrates.
- 340kb - Approximately 42.5KB/s
- 48kb - Approximately 6KB/s
- 28kb - Approximately 3KB/s
Media player that has the Windows Media 9 video/audio codec installed.
This includes Windows Media Player version 9 and above.
**Note** - Newer versions of Windows Media Player are
available through Windows Update.
Troubleshooting
If you are having troubles with the videos, here are some things to try.
- Verify your Internet connection speed is equal to or faster than the speeds listed.
To test this try to download a file from the internet, if you can download faster
than 3KB/s you are above the minimum for the lowest quality stream. If your Internet
connection is faster than that, your media player will automatically play the fastest
stream you are capable of.(see image below).
- Run Windows Update and
download the latest version of Windows Media Player.

Updates
We recently completed a redesign of our video streaming/downloading processes. The
redesign was needed to simplify many of the administrative processes associated
with the streaming/downloading of course videos.
How this benefits you as a faculty member:
- Flexible naming of your course folders and course videos.
Because of the redesign, you are no longer restricted to
our naming scheme
for your course folders or files. The course folders or
files can now be
named however you would like. This will be covered more
thoroughly in the
Streaming/Downloading Links section.
- Access to you video folder from off campus.
An added feature of the redesign is the ability to access
your video folder
from off campus. This will allow you to create, upload,
and organize your
videos without the need to be on campus. To learn more about
this go to the
Connecting to Your Video Folder section.
Streaming/Downloading Links
The redesign of our video streaming/downloading processes has made it possible for
instructors to use a personalized naming scheme for their course folders and files.
The following default formats will be used if a personalized naming scheme is not
implemented.
Default Link Formats
Streaming Link:
http://streaming.dsu.edu/YourUserName/
ClassFolder/DateOfVideoRecording.wmv
Downloading Link: (Right Click and Save Link/Target As)
http://www.video.dsu.edu/downloads/YourUserName/
ClassFolder/DateOfVideoRecording.wmv
As an instructor, you are free to rename all folders and files inside 'YourUserName'
folder on the video server. For more information on accessing your folder, please
go to the Connecting
to Your Video Folder section. Each streaming/downloading link will always
include the corresponding format up to YourUserName. We ask that you do not use
any whitespaces in your naming scheme, as this will not allow the links to work
properly.
